WHIRLWING ADVENTURES: Miles Around the World

Educational, touch-screen, puzzle adventure game for children ages 4 - 6. The game provides a fun and interactive platform for children to learn about basic geography and various animals from around the world as they develop problem-solving skills. This game is designed to be played on a touch-screen device. The game is best played on a larger tablet as the target audience is young children, and their dexterity/motor skills are still developing.

Storyline Overview:

The main protagonist is a blue jay named Miles. He receives a new photo album from his friend Luna, the screech owl, and the two of them decide to venture around the globe to make new animal friends and collect photos to add to his album. As they travel the world, Miles must solve puzzles in order to meet new friends and is rewarded with a brief conversation with them, a photo taken for his album, and a “star” to track the player's progress.

Gameplay Overview:

  • The player meets Miles and accesses the world map, which is the HUB where players can find:

    • Lock and unlock levels

    • Track their progress (Stars collected)

    • Visit animal friends

    • Access their photo album (Images and facts from completed levels)

    • Access activities and puzzles to meet new friends
       

  • By selecting a continent on the world map, players open up a variety of regions that contain challenges they must complete in order to befriend animals, level up and unlock new continents (levels).

  • Upon selecting a region, the player is presented with a puzzle or activity that aims to enhance key skills such as motricity, perception, concentration, listening and problem-solving.
     

  • There is no failure; players can complete each challenge at their own pace. "Making mistakes" triggers positive feedback of encouragement to try again as many times as the player wants.
     

  • On a challenge successfully completed, Miles meets a new animal endemic from that region, learns a fun fact about their new friend, gets their photo taken, which is saved in their photo album, collects a star and returns to the world map that now has more regions unlocked.
     

  • For replayability purposes, players have the freedom to revisit regions at any time. Upon revisiting a completed challenge, players encounter a slightly modified version of the same type of challenge they have previously completed. Additionally, Miles and their friend from that specific region will join forces to attempt the activity together this time.

Level Design:

 

On every level, Miles' voice explains each challenge to the player. Every time the player touches a character, it responds with simple animation and sound, as well as any other elements on the screen. When the challenge is completed, the characters dance and celebrate. 

Building a snowman Level.

Polished art

​​​​​​In this level, the player can slide snowballs left and right to increase their size, then tap and drag the elements to weld them together so the snowman takes form.

Memory and matching Level.

​​​​​​In this level, the player memorizes where each element is located. Once all elements are covered, the player needs to tap two elements to uncover them and match the animals with the type of food they eat.

Drawing Level.

​​​​​​In this level, the player can see a hatched border on the easel and paint buckets on each side. Players must select a colour and either fill the shape or draw the border to trigger an illustration on challenge completed.

Sculpting Level.

The Player needs to tap on the rock several times to "sculpt" a statue.  

Collecting apples Level.

​​​​​​The player needs to put all the apples into the basket. As the player collects the apples Miles tells and shows them how many apples are inside the basket.

The player needs to pile the blocks properly inside the hatched area.

The player needs to drag and drop the alligator's teeth onto the right spot.

Silhouette Level.

The player needs to drag and drop the animal that corresponds to the silhouette.

The player needs to help Miles and his friend Bear join the group of animals they belong to by dragging and dropping them onto the right spot.

Making music Level.

The player must tap on the drums to trigger sounds and complete the sequence displayed at the bottom of the scene.
